通例、rolloutは、「新製品の発売開始」とか「製品投入」、「大規模生産開始」といった意味で用いられるが、新型コロナウイルス感染症の文脈では、新たに開発され急ピッチで実用化に成功したワクチンが、治験をパスして各国政府当局の承認を受けた後、一般の人々を対象とした大規模な接種段階に入ったときに広く用いられた。その後、追加接種（ブースター接種）の大規模導入などに際してもこのrolloutという表現が用いられている。
