Social distancingは、感染防止のため人との距離を置くこと。
具体的には、人の集まる場所（特に室内）や集会、公共交通機関などを避けること、握手やハグ、キスなど他人との接触行為を避け、できれば2メートル以上距離を開けることなど。在宅勤務やオンライン授業、宅配利用などがsocial distancingの手段として奨励される。

東京都は「NO!! 3密」のスローガンの下に「密閉」「密集」「密接」の3条件を避けるよう呼びかけているが、この3条件を回避することがsocial distancingの狙いである。
