ウイルスに対する免疫反応の結果放出されるサイトカイン（生理活性蛋白質）という物質がさらに免疫反応を促す、免疫系の暴走状態のこと。高サイトカイン血症（hypercytokinemia）、サイトカイン放出症候群（cytokine release syndrome）とも呼ばれる。健康な若年者でCOVID-19が重篤化するケースは、サイトカインストームが要因で起きていると言われる。
