• fomiteの語源はラテン語のfōmes（gen. fōmitis、木の欠片）である。この語が火起こしや火を移すために使われる火口や焚き付けを意味することは、fōmesがfoveō（熱する、暖める）から派生したことでも分かる*1。疫病を語るために火のメタファーを用いることは、古くから行われてきた（参考: WIkipedia「ラシャプ」）。
• fomite transmissionの訳語は「媒介物感染」が一般的である。しかし、少数だが「物を介する感染」「物を介した感染」を用いる例がある。一例として

点鼻では感受性細胞に到達できるウイルスが限られるが，エアロゾルの噴霧は上気道・下気道の上皮細胞に直接感染するため，100倍以上効率よく感染できると思われる。一方，物を介する感染（fomite transmission）では，さらに多くのウイルスが必要と思われる。
