日本では、咳エチケットという言葉が、くしゃみの飛沫防止エチケットをも意味するのが一般的である。例えば厚生労働省のウェブサイトでの定義は次の通り。

「咳エチケット」は、これらの感染症を他人に感染させないために、個人が咳・くしゃみをする際に、マスクやティッシュ・ハンカチ、袖を使って、口や鼻をおさえることです。

しかし、英語表現では、「咳」 (coughing) と「くしゃみ」 (sneezing) が併記されることが多い。
2020年6月11日追記: 咳エチケットが新型コロナウイルス対策として注目された初め、報道でcoughing or sneezing etiquetteの使用が目立った。しかし現時点ではcough etiquetteが使用頻度で圧倒している。これをうけて、英語表現の第一位をcough etiquetteに変更した。
