補足・特記事項など
英語版ウィキペディアでは、Misinformationの項に "Not to be confused with Disinformation." という注意書きが添えられていて、misinformationとdisinformationをかなり厳密に区別して扱っているが、この区別については温度差があり、上記EU議会のように「悪意のないものもdisinformationと呼ぶ」ところもあれば、「悪意がない場合はmisinformationで、ある場合に限ってdisinformationと呼ぶ」という方針のところもある。
元々disinformationという語は戦争分野の表現で、ロシア語から英語に取り入れられている。英語での初出は1980年代後半（冷戦末期）だそうだ。
EU議会が「不正確な情報」を表すためのざっくりとしたタームとしてdisinformationという語を採用している経緯は、正直、よくわからないが、EUは21世紀に "EU vs Disinfo" というタスクフォースを立ち上げて情報戦（からの防衛）をおこなうようになっている。そのツイートの一例が下記。
今回の新型コロナウイルスに関するロシア製disinfoとしては、下記のようなものがある。
日本語の「デマ」は、原義（狭義）の「政治的意図のある、情報攪乱のためのニセ情報」に限らず、ざっくりと「不正確な情報、誤情報」を言うが、これを英語で「デマ」を直訳したつもりになってdemagogyと表しても、おそらく、全然通じない。
